Restriction Hold
Free content brings people in, and members-only content keeps them paying. Restriction Hold lets you do both with the same post: it stays open to everyone at first, and you restrict content after a date you choose, so from then on only the right members can open it.
You set the date once, in the post editor. On that day the post moves behind your Memberships by itself.
Restrict content after a date, post by post
- Free until the date. Before the date you pick, everyone can read the post, visitors included.
- Members-only from that day. From the start of the chosen day, the post’s normal restriction applies.
- Uses the rules you already have. The restriction that starts is the one in the post’s Locker box or in your Access Rules. Restriction Hold only decides when it starts.
- Set in the post editor. Pick the date with a date picker at the bottom of the Ultimate Membership Pro Locker box.
- Any post type. It works on pages, posts and custom post types, wherever the Locker box appears.
- Easy to change. Clear the date, and the post simply follows its normal restriction.
How Restriction Hold works
- Restrict the post to your Memberships as usual.
- Switch on Restriction Hold in Ultimate Membership Pro.
- In the post editor, pick the date the restriction should start, then update the post.
- Until that date the post is public. From then on, only members with the right Membership get in.
Step-by-step setup is in the Restriction Hold guide.
Restriction Hold or Restriction Release?
The two add-ons are mirror images. Restriction Hold means open now, restricted from the date. Restriction Release means restricted now, open from the date. Use both on one post for a full timeline: public until the Hold date, members-only after it, and public again from the Release date.
Both use calendar dates that are the same for everyone. To open content a set time after each member’s Membership starts, use Drip Content.
When free first, members later makes sense
- Launch previews. Publish a new lesson free for your launch month so visitors can judge your content, then keep it as a member perk.
- Free for a limited time. Open a premium guide to everyone for a few weeks, and let it move behind your Memberships on the date you set.
For example, a coaching club restricts its Week 1 lesson to Pro Monthly and sets a Restriction Hold date of December 1. Until then everyone can read it, visitors included. From December 1, only Pro Monthly members can open it, and everyone else goes to the Default Redirect Page.
Works well with
- Restrict Past Content, to keep older posts for the members who were there when they came out.
- Content restriction, the Locker box and Access Rules that decide who gets in once the date arrives.
