Ultimate Membership Pro works with WPML, so one site can run its registration and login forms, Member Portal, checkout and emails in several languages. The plugin ships a WPML configuration file, which tells WPML which texts saved in the plugin settings can be translated.
This guide lists what gets translated where, then sets up each part.
Before you start
- WPML Multilingual CMS and its String Translation add-on are installed, and your languages are set up in WPML.
- The membership pages exist and work in your default language. See Set up the membership pages.
- One language only? You don’t need WPML; see Translate the plugin.
What gets translated where
Register, Login, Member Portal, Checkout, Thank You and the other pages from Pages Setup. Translate them like any page in WPML; the shortcodes stay the same in every language.
Labels, buttons and messages written in the code, text domain ihc. Translate them in WPML String Translation, or with translation files per language.
The plugin’s wpml-config.xml lists about 130 settings that WPML can translate as admin texts: Custom Messages, Member Portal tab names and messages, checkout and thank you texts, payment method labels, Membership details, registration fields, invoice texts and more.
Subjects and messages, registered in String Translation under the ihc domain with names such as register_title_-1 and register_message_-1 (notification type, then the Membership ID; -1 means all Memberships).
Translate the membership pages
- Open Pages and translate each membership page into every language with WPML.
- Keep the plugin shortcode in each translation, for example [ihc-register] on the Register page.
- Check Ultimate Membership Pro›Settings›Pages Setup: it points to the pages of your default language.
Translate the plugin texts
- In WPML String Translation, filter the strings by the
ihcdomain. - If the plugin’s strings aren’t listed yet, scan Ultimate Membership Pro with WPML’s theme and plugin localization tool first.
- Translate each string you need and mark it complete.
You can also use translation files per language instead: ihc-de_DE.mo, ihc-fr_FR.mo and so on. WPML loads the file of the language being viewed.
Translate the texts saved in the settings
- Save the plugin settings you want to translate at least once, for example Custom Messages and the Member Portal.
- In WPML String Translation, look for them among the admin texts, or search for the text itself.
- Translate them like the other strings.
Translate the emails
- Go to Ultimate Membership Pro›Email Notifications and save a notification once. With WPML active, this registers the subject and message of every notification in String Translation.
- In String Translation, filter by
ihcand translate the notifications you use.
Each email is sent in the language of the member’s WordPress profile (Language field of the user profile). Members without a profile language get the site’s default language.
Good to know
- The plugin uses the language WordPress reports for each page view, so test the whole flow (register, checkout, Member Portal) in every language.
- Strings for notifications are registered when you save one. Added a notification later? Save it again so WPML picks it up.
- Translations in String Translation replace the text only when the string is marked complete.
Tip
- Translate the Custom Messages first: they hold the success and error messages members see most.
Example: Coaching Club in English and German
- Languages in WPML

Troubleshooting
Why don’t I see Ultimate Membership Pro strings in WPML String Translation?
Scan the plugin with WPML’s theme and plugin localization tool, then filter String Translation by the ihc domain. Texts saved in the settings appear only after you save those settings once.
Why are emails still sent in English?
Save a notification once with WPML active so the subjects and messages are registered, translate them in String Translation, and check the member’s profile Language: emails follow it, or the site’s default language when it’s empty.
Why does a translated page show the form in the default language?
The page shows texts in the language WordPress is using for that page view. Make sure the page is the WPML translation (not a copy), and that its strings are translated and marked complete.
