Cards expire, get replaced or reach their limit. With Stripe Connect, members can update the payment card for their membership themselves: they open the Member Portal, click Change Card and enter the new card. Their next renewal is charged to it, and you don’t have to step in.
This works for every recurring Membership paid with Stripe Connect, the payment gateway we recommend for paid Memberships. There is nothing to switch on.
Before you start
- Stripe Connect connected and active. See Set up Stripe.
- A Recurring Subscription Membership that members buy with Stripe Connect.
- A Member Portal page with the Subscriptions tab showing. See Set up the Member Portal.
What members see
- The member logs in and opens the Subscriptions tab of the Member Portal.
- Next to their recurring Membership they click Change Card.
- A card form opens with their name filled in. They check the Name on the Card, enter the new card number, expiry date and CVC.
- They click Change Card again to save. A confirmation message appears in the form.
The card details go straight to Stripe through its secure card field, so they never touch your server. Stripe may ask the bank to confirm the card with 3D Secure.
What happens after the change
The new card is added to the member’s customer record and set as the default payment method of their subscription.
Stripe charges the new card on the next billing date. The billing date, price and Membership stay the same.
Each recurring Membership has its own Change Card button, so a member can choose which subscription uses which card.
Tip
Remind members before their card expires: add the Change Card step to the text of your renewal reminder email in email notifications, with a link to the Member Portal.
Test it
- Turn on test mode for Stripe Connect and buy a recurring Membership with a test member. Stripe lists test card numbers you can use.
- In the Member Portal, open Subscriptions, click Change Card and save a different test card.
- In your Stripe test dashboard, open the subscription: the new card shows as its default payment method.
Troubleshooting
Where do members change their card?
In the Subscriptions tab of the Member Portal, with the Change Card button next to each recurring Membership paid with Stripe Connect.
Which Memberships show the Change Card button?
Recurring Subscription Memberships bought with Stripe Connect. One-time payments have no future charges, so there is no card to change.
Does changing the card change the price or the renewal date?
No. The member keeps the same Membership, price and billing date. Only the card used for the next charges changes.
Is it safe for members to enter their card on my site?
Yes. The card field is provided by Stripe, so the card number goes directly to Stripe and is never stored on your site.
Can I move my existing Stripe Checkout subscriptions so members get this button?
